Join us on a tour of the province of Cartago, where nature, history, and Costa Rican traditions come together to offer an authentic experience. From the breathtaking landscapes of the Irazú Volcano to the cultural richness of the Basilica of Los Ángeles and the tranquility of the Orosi Valley, this tour allows you to discover some of the most iconic sites of Costa Rica’s natural and cultural heritage.
The adventure begins with a departure from San José toward the mountains of the Central Volcanic Range. As we ascend, you’ll notice changes in the vegetation and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Central Valley until we reach Irazú Volcano National Park, home to the highest volcano in Costa Rica’s Central Volcanic Range. At an elevation of 3,432 meters above sea level, this impressive colossus offers unique landscapes and, on clear days, the chance to see both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.
During your visit to the park, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the main overlooks and admire the impressive main crater of the Irazú Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most iconic natural attractions. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and following the park’s guidelines to help protect this important ecosystem.
Afterward, we’ll continue on to the city of Cartago to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, one of Costa Rica’s most important religious sites and a symbol of great significance to the country’s culture and traditions. In addition to exploring this iconic sanctuary, you’ll have time to visit a local shop where you can purchase handicrafts, souvenirs, and traditional products made by local artisans.
Our next stop will be the beautiful Orosi Valley, known for its lush mountains, agricultural landscapes, and rural communities that have preserved much of Costa Rica’s traditional character. During the tour, you’ll be able to appreciate the natural beauty of this region, characterized by its plantations, rivers, and landscapes that reflect the close relationship between local communities and their natural surroundings.
We will visit the historic Colonial Church of Orosi, built in 1767 by Franciscan friars and considered one of the oldest churches still in use in Costa Rica. This important monument reflects the historical and architectural legacy that is part of Costa Rica’s cultural heritage.
To wrap up the experience, we’ll enjoy a delicious traditional Costa Rican lunch at a local restaurant in the area, where you can savor traditional flavors while taking in the scenic views that characterize the Orosi Valley.
At the end of the tour, we will head back to San José with a deeper understanding of the history, culture, traditions, and natural wealth that set Costa Rica apart.
